SYMBOLISM
Shield. The shield is borrowed from the Town of Cherbourg, located on the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula where then-Seaman First Class Robert Ward completed his rescue of the crew from two destroyed landing craft at Utah Beach.  Additions to the shield are the three flames, underscoring the motto, HEROISM UNDER FIRE.  The three mullets have been replaced with thirteen to represent the USS JOSEPH T. DICKMAN (APA-13), the Navy attack transport ship to which Robert Ward was assigned during the landings in Italy and France.

Crest.  The tower embattlement denotes the invasion at Normandy and is colored red for courage.  The five-pointed mullet represents the Silver Star Robert Ward received for his actions on June 6, 1944.

Supporters.  The crossed Browning machine guns symbolize that while Ward was under enemy fire, he repaired his damaged .30 caliber weapon and continued towards the beach to complete the rescue of his shipmates.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background, enclosed by a dark blue border edged on the outside with a gold rope, inscribed USCGC ROBERT WARD above and WPC 1130 below, all gold.
